There are many different types of barrels or tanks that you could use to store your harvested rain water, and the above list is not exhaustive. Your budget and available space will be the two main factors to influence your choice.  


If you own your own property and have the funds, it might be wise to consider a 2500l or more tank. This could be buried in the garden and provide all your water needs.

For This System

We will be concentrating on UN approved Blue Barrels, like this one from Kingfisher direct. Their description of it is very good so I have quoted them below. The reason that I like barrels is that most houses will have a space near the back door that could accommodate one or more of these barrels and generally will have a downpipe near by too.

These drum come in various sizes and the smaller ones will be useful for the filter component. The large 220l drum is the perfect size for the initial storage barrel and the final storage barrels for the fully Automated System. The important aspects for our needs are that they are made of;


  • HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). This is to be considered a safe form of ridged plastic which does not leech into the contents of the barrel. (see HDPE page)


  • Food Grade.


  • Tight clamping lid on a wide mouthed barrel.


  • UV resistant.


  • Convenient sizes and manoeuvrable.  


  • BPA free.


  • Can easily have holes drilled into them.


These barrels in various sizes will be used for the 1st rain water storage barrel, the filter component (if using) and the final storage barrel/barrels.
